Firstly I would like to point out that I am not a train aficionado. However, like many others I depend on the railways to carry me from place to place, and like many others I feel disappointed when the railways fail to provide a flawless service.

The scope for development in this arena is self-evident; cancellations, tardiness and sporadic services don't serve the public interest. I wanted to work for a transport company that understood these issues and endeavoured to find practical solutions to improve the rail network.

Arriva's ambition and growth over the last decade has made them one of the strongest most influential businesses in the public transport sector. Arriva's newest franchise, CrossCountry, began in November 2007 promising to provide more seats, better performance and innovative solutions to convoluted problems.

CrossCountry is undergoing a major renovation including the introduction of new trains, new tickets, a new website and the complete refurbishment of all its trains. It is unquestionably a time of transition, and fortunately the general management scheme has allowed me to be involved in these changes.

Working in this entirely new environment can be challenging, however working in an amicable atmosphere, with the added support of a mentor and a large group of graduate colleagues provides ample support.

The general management scheme provides a great framework to work within but ultimately the course is defined by your own needs and goals. The company makes all the resources available but it's your responsibility to make the most of this opportunity, and there is infinite scope for development as long as you're willing to invest time and effort.

Over the last five months I have travelled over our extensive network and experienced a multitude of diverse projects. CrossCountry is a fascinating, multi faceted business, and under Arriva's graduate scheme you are given the freedom to explore all aspects of this business.
