As a graduate, it is not always obvious what you want to do to start up your career. An excellent way to see and experience as much as possible of an organisation is to have an opportunity to take part in a trainee programme. During my time as a graduate in Arriva I have seen all the elements of the organisation which has been an incredibly useful experience. I spent my first 6 months with Arriva in operations, where I did everything from driving the bus, to assisting the operation manager. I believe that this is an incredibly useful experience, particular in this industry since this is the very core of our business and it is vital to understand how it works. Early stages of the scheme are hands-on which gives a good flavour for a theoretical technician. After completion of the operational part I was given an overview of the role of the central functions. At HQ, I got a deeper understanding of the key elements, enabling me to see the whole picture. Everywhere I go in Arriva I meet inspiring people with lots of experience, and it is very important that I try to take advantage of their know-how and learn from it. The international exchange programme has been really good, where many thoughts and ideas can be exchanged between different regions and countries. |
