When did you start? 'I joined Arriva in 2001 and, frankly, I regret that I didn't join sooner. As a company, we're all about people. So from the moment I arrived I found the environment welcoming, the people friendly, approachable and patient. You can really learn a lot quickly, plus there have been plenty of opportunities to get to know people socially.
Where are you now? 'I've become a Depot Manager in a fairly short space of time. That's what I mean about learning quickly! I think if you concentrate on developing your knowledge of what other people do and the challenges they face, then you can contribute so much more in your own role. If I'd joined Arriva earlier in my career, I'd definitely have spent more time working closely with drivers to understand the pressures they are under - after all, you can't manage a depot if you don't know what it's like to be a driver!
What next? There is constant change here and that means you can always get involved in something new. I've recently been chosen as a Diversity Workshop Facilitator, which means I help out other employees with advice on diversity issues. Our aim as a company is to reflect the diversity of the communities we serve, so it's an interesting and unusual subject to be involved in. Apart from that, I help to manage a nightclub at weekends and I also have an young, active family, so I'm always on the move!'
